Pipeline Plastics offers the following information to assist you in your factory mutual needs.

Installation

Polyethylene pipe is installed by a variety of techniques including open trench, direct plow-in, and trenchless installation methods such as horizontal directional drilling and pipe bursting. The flexibility, smaller bend radius, and fully restrained joints enable the polyethylene pipeline to be installed with fewer fittings and smaller open pits. Pipeline Plastics recommends following the Plastics Pipe Institute, “ Handbook of PE Pipe, 2nd ed.” and AWWA M-55, “PE Pipe – Design and Installation” for design and installation guidance. Pipeline Plastics recommends field leak testing of PE pipe according to ASTM F2164,” Standard Practice for Field Leak Testing of Polyethylene (PE) Pressure Piping Systems Using Hydrostatic Pressure.” Maximum test pressure should be 1.5X system design pressure taking into account the temperature of the pipe and other pressure transients (e.g. elevation changes) at the time of testing.

Joining

Polyethylene pipe is typically joined by heat fusion techniques to give a fully restrained leak-free joint. Pipeline Plastics recommends heat fusion joining following ASTM F2620, “Standard Practice for Heat Fusion Joining of Polyethylene Pipe and Fittings”, PPI TR-33 or PPI TR-41.

Other joining methods include electro-fusion fittings, mechanical fittings and couplings, flange adapters, MJ, adapters, and transition fittings to other types of piping materials. Additional joining and design information can be found on the Plastics Pipe Institute website.
